The Power of a Concert

I believe that concerts are used as a medium in which fans are able to truly connect with the artist and each other. Whether it be solely through the music performed, the atmosphere created or even through viewing the individualistic idea and message the artist has crafted for their tour. Concerts allow audiences to actively take hold of their experience and craft it to their own needs and wants.

Bruno Mars is at the forefront of my mind when pondering which concert I felt a shared unity in experience amongst the whole audience.

Mars has become a popular and monumental figure amongst pop culture however, despite his A-list status I did not witness any lack of determination, creativity or entitlement from Mars and his staff. Instead everything was done to the nine; his merchandise, the upbeat pre-show playlist, the immense interaction between him and the crowd, the choreography, the set, lights and stage. Basically everything was executed amazingly and this resulted in an exceptional experience for the audience.

The careful consideration of planning done by Mars and his team was what made the experience so enjoyable for audience members. Small details like adding in “You said you wanted to go to Paris or the Bahamas, and I was like nah …we going to Blacktown” and other dialogue during ‘Calling All my Lovelies’ deepened the spirit of crowd interaction and satisfaction. Specifically, it was both an entertaining and pivotal moment for the audience experience as not only was it humorous, but it also evoked a sense of collective pride within individuals (evident through many, loud cheers), as for once an artist was recognising the character present in Sydney’s suburbs and not just the ‘gorgeous Opera house and scenery’.

Even the effort put into staging and lights was elevated above the standard of his peers, as it appeared as if every expense was taken to make sure the audience did not experience anything typical. Platforms raised out of the floor, lights moved, props were dispensed down from the ceiling, the bright, colourful lighting, illuminated the stadium and all of this combined to create a funky, upbeat atmosphere that paralleled the immense funk and personality that Bruno and his music emulates.

The crowd interaction was sensational as everyone was dancing and singing along. The opportunity to be an active audience enabled us to make the most out of the experience as we were all able to dance and sing the night away. The atmosphere was so lively and high-spirited that it became infectious, as even before the show there was a dance battle between to individuals across the stadium (that was a first for me). A sense of community was present in the air as the entire stadium united to groove along with Bruno and his entourage.

Out of all the concerts I have been to I can say with no hesitation that the social connection present that night was like no other. It made me realise the extreme extent to which music acts as an international language that unites people of different cultures, ethnicities, religions and background. That night everyone in the stadium was united by one common interest: to have a great time.

  2. Relating the subject’s topic about audiences to your personal concert experience is a very smart and interesting approach! The images (Which i’m guessing you took) add a really creative component to your writing and immerses us (the readers) into your experience. I felt like I was at Bruno Mars with you! Your writing itself is far from boring and is addictive to read. I find what you say about audiences current and relatable. You are very talented and I can’t wait to read more of your blogs, as your content and images are artistic and fun to read.
