Glitch is the new black

Pink, yellow, orange, green, you name a colour and it’s probably been labelled the ‘new black’ however, glitch aesthetics has come to take this title.

A glitch is ‘a sudden instance of malfunctioning or irregularity in an electronic system’ (Dictionary.com, 2019). Consequently, glitches are often found irritating, but in the new age of media, glitches have become a trendy, aesthetic.

Essentially, this stylistic approach has had a large influence on pop culture and design across mediums such as, video games, media, fashion and film. Creators across these platforms have been adopting the glitch aesthetic into their work for creative reasons and also in order to keep up with the relevant trends.

For example, some fashion brands are incorporating glitch patterns and styles into their clothing in order to keep up competition.

The popularity behind the glitch aesthetic is subjective as each individual’s interest is different, however the general concept is that people are attracted to the nostalgic feeling glitch art evokes. This being as the visuals are heavily 80s and 90s influenced and reminiscent of outdated software and programming.

Furthermore, the popularity of the glitch aesthetic begs the question will more digital trends influenced by the past emerge and if so, will it do so with such social welcoming.
