World War Meme

“Modern propaganda is a consistent, enduring effort to create or shape events to influence the relations of the public to an enterprise, idea or group”

– Edward Bernays, Propaganda, 1928, p.25

Gone were the days when memes where just funny little images about minions or me gusta, now memes are being taken advantage of to communicate, powerful political messages.

Why use memes for political messages?

Memes have become the language of the internet, therefore presenting information to audiences through this medium increases the chance that they understand and are interest in what is being communicated. In addition, memes are able to reach a large audience, multiple platforms and are able to be interacted with.

A prime candidate for political memes is President of the United States, Donald Trump. Although most of these memes are poking fun at his hair (or lack thereof), consistent use of twitter or orange, cheeto coloured skin there are also memes that have serious undertones.

Examples of meme parody videos about Trump:

Another example, is the #DraftOurDaughters meme trend where 4Chan users, took advantage of the style, format and tropes of Hillary Clinton’s campaigns and made disturbing and dark memes. Consequently, many individuals unaware that the memes were not apart of Hillary’s campaign distanced themself from her and her message.
