The power of social media

Although social networks can be utilised in a materialistic manner, such as posting pictures of what one is eating or selfies from their lastest night out, it can also be used as a tool for social justice and activism.

This form of social activism grants ordinary citizens the power to spread awareness about social and political issues, hence encouraging a need for a form of change. These social networks provide users with ubiquitous connectivity, immediacy and participation. Meaning that users are in theory, able to connect with everyone and everything no matter the time or location practically immediately and with the opportunity to participate despite not being physically present.

These social network revolutions relate immensely to the concept of, ‘connectivity is power’. This being as they demonstrate that by having these platforms with no barriers, no cost of entry and with a general lack of control and censorship that users are able to obtain power through this ability to connect and spread a message.

In particular, social media played a role in regards to the Arab Spring uprisings. Social media allowed the protesters to communicate to a global audience what was occurring during these uprisings and granted them access to “exercise freedom of speech and as a space for civic engagement”

This video highlights other ways in which social media assisted in the Arab Spring.
